The word ‘tinnitus’ comes from the Latin word for ‘ringing’ and is the perception of sound in the absence of any corresponding external sound. This noise may be heard in one ear, in both ears or in the middle of the head or it may be difficult to pinpoint its exact location. The noise may be low, medium or high‑pitched. There may be a single noise or two or more components. The noise may be continuous or it may come and go.

What causes tinnitus?

Tinnitus is not a disease or an illness, it is a symptom generated within a person’s own auditory pathways. Although it is often assumed that tinnitus occurs as a result of disease of the ears, this is often not the case. The precise cause of tinnitus is still not fully understood.

Who gets tinnitus?

Experiences of tinnitus are very common in all age groups, especially following exposure to loud noise; however, it is unusual for it to be a major problem. There is a widely held misconception that tinnitus is confined to the elderly, but various studies have shown that it can occur at any age, even in quite young children. Mild tinnitus is common ‑ about 10 per cent of the population have it all the time and, in up to one per cent of adults, this may affect the quality of their life.

What to do if you think you have tinnitus?

Tinnitus is rarely an indication of a serious disorder, but it is wise to see your doctor if you think you might have it. Should something treatable be causing it, you may be referred to a specialist.

  • try not to worry

The noises may seem worse if you are anxious or stressed. When tinnitus starts, particularly if it’s sudden, you may naturally be frightened and your concentration or your sleep may be disturbed. You may get angry and frustrated because no‑one else understands, or you may live alone and not have anyone to talk to about it ‑ that’s where the BTA can help. You can contact the BTA office in Sheffield and speak to one of the helpline adviserswho have years of experience talking to people with tinnitus, we can also put you in touch with a support group if there is one in your area. Groups are run by people who are living with tinnitus ‑ personal contact and shared experience are very useful for many people with tinnitus.

  • find out more

You will probably feel better when you find out more about the condition ‑ that it’s very common and you’re not alone. There is lots of information on this website for you to explore, written by experts in the field.

Many people say they notice tinnitus less when they are doing something. Keeping your mind occupied helps (but don’t overdo things). If the noises seem louder at quiet times, particularly during the night, it may help to have soothing music or some other environmental or natural sound quietly on in the background.

Practising relaxation and taking time out for yourself can also be a great help.

  • join the British Tinnitus Association

The Association was over founded 35 years ago by people with tinnitus. When you join you will receive free information leaflets and our quarterly magazine, Quiet.

The BTA offers a numbers of types of membership, so that all members of the tinnitus community can show their support for the BTA and benefit from our advice and help.

  • Individual – suitable for people with tinnitus, or those individuals who wish to support people with tinnitus and the work of the BTA, but who are not working with people with tinnitus in a professional capaicty.
  • Corporate – organisations with more than 5 staff, or those who want to benefit from the most extensive membership package we offer.
  • Small Business – organisations with 5 or less employees are offered this discounted package with benefits more appropriate to smaller companies.
  • Public Sector – designed for public sector and non-profit organisations working to support those affected by tinnitus.
  • Professional – individual professionals working with people affected by tinnitus (such as a GP, audiologist, counsellor or hearing therapist or ENT surgeon).

If you work somewhere noisy, and the decibel level is over 80dB(A), you’re trained & educated to understand the risks involved in working in that kind of noisy environment and hearing protection is made available. At 85dB(A) and above hearing protection should be provided.

SONAR RADIO SHOW presents /// SONNY WHARTON guest mix /// THURSDAY 28th JAN 2016 /// 18:00 – 20:00

GROOVE CITY RADIO are delighted to bring you another outstanding guest mix from dj & producer SONNY WHARTON… Sonar Radio show presented by host Steven McGuinness broadcast every Thursday night from 6pm on GCR is one of our #bangingthursday show’s bringing you 2 hours of #techno & #techhouse tracks doing the rounds on the beatport & traxsource charts

With DMC Magazine hailing him as “One of the finest new producers around’’, Sonny Wharton has firmly established himself as one of the brightest prospects to emerge from the UK in recent years.

Beginning his career as a DJ, Sonny first gained recognition by winning a DJ Mag mix-tape competition for Renaissance; it was this breakthrough that gave him a prominent start within Ibiza’s club scene, leading to high profile slots at Amnesia, Space, Pacha, Ministry Of Sound and a weekly residency at the infamous Manumission.

Since then, Sonny has received regular support from house music heavyweights Pete Tong, Armand Van Helden, Steve Angello, Roger Sanchez and most notably, Fatboy Slim, who proclaimed “I’m devouring everything Sonny does right now, my producer of the year” which prominently led to Sonny supporting him on his sell out “Eat Sleep Rave Repeat” tour.

Last summer Sonny clocked up some serious national radio recognition with his single ‘Raindance’ being personally submitted by Carl Cox for BBC Radio 1’s Ibiza ‘Review Show’, ultimately winning over the panel to become BBC Radio 1’s ‘Jam of the Week’. Being no stranger to the spotlight, his tracks have also featured on primetime TV for Channel 5’s ‘The Gadget Show’, E4’s ‘Misfits’ and MTV.

A regular artist on Brighton based Skint Records and with releases on the likes of Size, Toolroom, Spinnin’ and Material, Sonny also runs his own successful label Whartone Records which recently celebrated its milestone 100th release featuring a collaboration between himself and X-Press 2.

“I’m devouring everything Sonny does right now.
My producer of the year.”
– Fatboy Slim

“Raindance, a great tune, I love it.

One of my tunes of the year.”

– Carl Cox
